Question about the original cowls
Hi folks,
After reviewing the photos of the original cowls and looking at what Williams 2 Studios have gone through to make accurate cowls, I've been wondering: Did any of the original designers state why they just didn't make the ears longer to begin with?
Thanks in advance!
And... Cheers!

Larry,
The story goes that taller ears would have been harder to frame for closeups of Adam.

Re: Question about the original cowls
Exactly. Also, the comics were using shorter ears at this time too. Especially in 1964 when Infantino started illustrating the "new look". The things remain that way until I believe Neal Adams starts growing them slowly while working on full stories rather than just the covers he was doing before.Mark Racop wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 11:10 pm Larry,

Re: Question about the original cowls
And wouldn't longer ears have been more likely to flop around during action sequences?
Re: Question about the original cowls
The end of the movie "Batman and Robin" to the contrary, the ears might have been stiffened with leather, or even wires. Just a couple of thoughts.

Re: Question about the original cowls
Scott and Mark know better than most of us. The longer ears would stand above the windshield in the car too.
For comparison:
1966 Screen test cowl, extended ears, at least 1” above the top of the cowl 1966 TV Cowl, tips of ears even with with the top of the cowl
1966 with Extended ears, more like the screen test cowl, but ears are stiffer
1970’s Cowl with Extended Ears after Neal Adams?

Some days you just can't get rid of a ... SHARK!
Re: Question about the original cowls
Personally, I think the slightly longer ears look better. Excessive long, no. The black leather photo directly above, to me, looks about perfect.
