Mego TV Batman coming to Big Lots

Post by Jim K, Bat fan »

I haven't seen this news reported on our Batman board, so I thought it would share it. According to the Mego Museum, there will be a 1966 TV Batman variant sold exclusively at Big Lots. The Joker also has shades of the TV version:

Wow, very cool.
Batman is how my mego looked in my head as I played with him as a child.
Superman is sporting my favorite s shield.
Robin is sort of meh, and I dont really dig his gauntlets.
Joker with purple hands? Cash grab.
That all said I will be on the look out for this set.

I'm happy that we are seeing the 50th Megos heros again. I was disappointed when Mego came back and didn't really have the heros back. That said I will probably only get the Batman in this set.

Is it me or is Batman giving anyone else late 90's/early 2000's homemade custom vibes?

I know the whole Mego appeal at this stage is based on nostalgia for their trademark jankiness, but that chest emblem looks like it was cut by a toddler and their slightly older sibling was in charge of the belt? This has to be a proto, right? :?

I remember when Mego first hit the department stores. I never bought any of them, but, at one point, they were being sold on clearance at the old Shillito‘s department store in Cincinnati (later Macy’s, but the Tri-County Mall is now permanently closed). I could have bought an entire aisle full of them for $.25 each. Literally they had hundreds on pegs in their clearance “garage.” I would have bought Spider-Man and Green Goblin, however, if I had the change. But I didn’t have even a quarter on my person.

I’d say definitely a prototype. You can see there is residue around the emblem, perhaps glue, or even adhesive from the old emblem that was removed. The new emblem also looks very matte in finish, as though it were home printed.

Custom vibes 100%.
Most likely a prototype here, so I'm sure the finished product will be better, but I think its a weak play to make it look like a '66 Batman-- same deal with the Fleischer Superman-- yeah that's the emblem and the belt from the cartoons but without the eyes squinting it just looks like a kid's marker switch - I remember all of my friends Megos eventually had drawn on logos on their chests.

I was happy to get the 50th Anniversary original 4 figures because those are the ones I remember the most-- and I'm happy to see they got the Marvel License too so I can add Cap and Spidey as they were in the original 6 but it's a likely pass for me on these, not enough change here to make a trip to the broken down toy section of a Big Lot worth while for me, just my two grumpy cents.

Hard pass on the Big Lots figures. As one of the original "Mego kids" of the 70s, I was quite satisfied with Batman and Robin being generic versions based on the comics. I never desired Mego-scaled figures based on the '66 TV series at all, or the Fleischer Superman, for that matter.

Where was the great groundswell of fan requests for a Fleischer Superman back in the 70s? This just seems like an attempt to milk every last dollar out of Mego collectors, when they have no problem making bank on the Marvel license, and whatever DC characters left to reproduce.
