Ian's artwork

Post by Therin of Andor »

I thought you might like to see some of my "Batman '66" inspired artworks.

These from 2015's online 52-Week Illustration Challenge:

Image
Week 36: Dance by Ian McLean, on Flickr

"Ballerina Superheroine". The late Yvonne Craig incorporated ballet moves into her weekly batfights in the 1960s' "Batman" television series. Silhouette cut from Quill Metallique and linenbond textured cards, collaged onto black card. Lettering in brown and blue Sharpie. Several photos used for reference from Google Images.

Week 12: Costume by Ian McLean, on Flickr

"Science fiction media convention costume parade". All of these entrants are me - Tellarites, Andorians and Robin the Boy Wonder - based on photos from several decades of costume parades, drawn and painted in a Perth hotel room. Sketch inked in black Sharpie on watercolour paper, coloured in watercolours and metallic Signo.

Very creative; I especially like the Batgirl one and the Matryoshka shapes. It took me a little bit to figure out that they were Russian nesting dolls.

My wife and I were in Sydney for a few days back in October. It was really warm. I hope the summer wasn't too hot for you. I would guess things are much cooler by now.

Thanks! The funny thing about the Russian nesting dolls. My comic shop had real, licensed "Batman" nesting dolls on the shelf the very next week!

We officially hit Winter today, and the weather had switched abruptly. Sunday was glorious weather, then Monday night the temps plummeted overnight to 27 degrees F. Brrrrr.

In 2018, I turned the collage into a bespoke clock for my penpal's husband, a big "Batman '66" fan.

Thanks. It was fun to photograph. The shadows of the layers can appear very differently.

Really great art, Ian. I very much admire that Batgirl clock and love that Robin collage from your friend. It perfectly captures the aura of late 1960s artwork. Looking at it kinda makes one feel like they're back there in that time frame for a couple seconds. The Aquaman clock is cool and original. All you need to do is somehow program Norm Alden's voice into it saying "It's now three o'clock" and so on... ;)
