How Old is Robin supposed to be?

In researching the 40's serials, I found it was noted that seeing a grown man punch a young kid in the '43 serial was unsettling to the audience and producers alike and changed the casting on future "Robins" to an older look.

An interesting observation and theory.

In the serials they were more equal partners. On a number of occasions Robin saved Batman.

Andy, I remember a reviewer saying in 1989 (the year I first bought and viewed the two serials) that Croft would have been a perfect Nightwing. .

Croft?? Nightwing? He was not even a good Robin. All wrong for the part.

I hadn't heard that but yeah, it's a bit jarring to see 'Robin' pinned & knocked cold by middle-aged men with mustaches in the serial. Do you have a link to articles where that's been noted?

I thought Croft was a perfect Robin-- exactly what you would get if you opted to have a 14-16 year old helping you. Causing equal amounts frustration and help. I've worked with teens.

I think the writer meant Duncan was more suited for Nightwing since he was pushing 30 when he played the part.
The serials are what they are, I like them, like the first one a WHOLE lot better than the second, but they're fun mindless Saturday matinee entertainment.

interestingly, he drives the batmobile in the first episode, suggesting he is 16 and has his license. Surely Batman would not let him drive the car without it, even just to move it.
In the 66 movie, he's a passenger with Alfred at the wheel.

So I'd go with 15 to 16 during the three year run.

Does he actually drive the batmobile in the first episode? I seriously don't remember... If he does, that is really really odd because I distinctly remember him getting his license in the first Batgirl episode which was in season 3...

My guess is he moved it without his license because in later episodes, Batman tells Robin that "someday he will be old enough to drive the batmobile" .

Particularly since it was wantonly parking next to a fire hydrant that blew False Face's cover as a vicious criminal attempting to pass himself off as a security guard...!
