The Riddler Is A Rat

Post by Bat-Tiger »

Hey fellow Bat-fans! I've just completed the first part of my latest Bat-fic. It starts off not long after my last story and I have to admit, I'm pleased how it went down. So without further delay I give you...

Batman
The Riddler Is A Rat

Inside Barbara Gordon's apartment, a telephone is about to ring, little does she know this phonecall will change her life forever. Batgirl is in the midst of trying on her new boots. "What do you think Charlie? Are they me?" Before her avian roommate can answer, the phone draws her attention away.

"Hello Alfred. Yes I was just trying them on, thank you. Mister Wayne is requesting my presence at Wayne Manor? You can't say why? That's all right, I'm sure you have your reasons. I'll be right over." A pull of a hidden lever, a speedy costume change, and the dominoed dare doll is on her way.

*Batspin*

Beneath stately Wayne Manor, our heroes await the arrival of their aloof but alluring ally, Batgirl.

"Holy anticipation Batman! It's like we're actually meeting Batgirl for the first time." Robin said excitedly, punching his gloved fist.

"You made an excellent point chum, trusting someone with a secret identity pales in comparison to trusting someone with your life. Batgirl has proven herself time and time again, and it is indeed time we all trusted each other with our true selves. We can only hope, she feels the same way."

A light flashes above them, signaling the doorbell. "Quick Robin, up the Batlift, we'll meet with her in the study." "Right Batman!" With that, the dynamic duo make their exit.

"Thank you for coming so soon Batgirl, Master Wayne and Master Dick are in the study." Alfred said, noticeably nervous.

"Not at all Alfred, it must be something important if one of Gotham's most upstanding citizens needs a few moments of my time." She notices Alfred seems a bit off, but she doesn't want to embarass him. But she can't help but wonder why he didn't try to summon Batman, since they've aided each other in the past.

"Right that way miss," he points the way, then turns, "if you'll pardon me, I have my duties to attend to."

"Thank you Alfred." she replies, and heads to the door.

What the furture holds for Gotham's finest heroes must wait. Because at this moment, a sinister scene is taking place at Gotham penitentiary.

*Batspin*

Inside the Riddler's cell, the captain of conundrums in putting the finishing touches on a puzzling device. His neighbor across the hall Joker, is inquiring about his activities.

"Riddler, you've been fooling around with something every moment the guards have their backs turned for days now. What are you up to?"

"Riddle me this, o great jester! What kind of device exists with the sole purpose of destroying itself?" Riddler answered, with his trademark giggle.

Joker furrowed his brow for a moment, then began to laugh himself. "A bomb! You've gotten someone to smuggle parts of a bomb to you!" He cackled in delight.

"Not just any bomb, Joker, this is a riddle bomb. The noise it makes is ten times as loud, and the flash from the explosion ten times as bright. Leaving everyone in it's wake completely baffled! Not only that's but it will contain two of my latest riddles." He laughed again, and pulled the mattress off his bed, then covered himself with it. Joker saw this, and did the same.

Just then a guard, hearing the laughter came to check on the arch criminals. "Say now, what's going on here?" No sooner did the words come out of his mouth, he was knocked against the wall by the blast. A huge hole was left in the outer wall, and two pieces of paper floated in the air.

"Ta taa Joker, be a good little clown and maybe I'll come back for you." Riddler leapt and ran across the yard, and as soon as he spied the special rope left for him by his accomplice, he was over the wall.

Warden Crieighton had just returned from lunch when he heard the explosion, and immediately began scanning all the cameras watching the cells. A look of horror spread across his face for a moment, then he gathered himself and reached for the phone.

Back at stately Wayne manor, the biggest secret in thie history of Gotham, was about to be revealed.

"You wanted to see me Mister Wayne?" Batgirl said as she entered the study, closing the door behind her. She was taken aback when she saw Batman and Robin waiting for her. "Batman? Robin? Alfred told me that Bruce Wayne needed to see me, are you two here as well?"

"In a matter of speaking Batgirl. Robin and I have been discussing a matter of utmost importance, concerning all of our secret identities. And we thought it best to include you."

"What? Has something happened? Did someone discover who we are? I would have been fine being blindfolded and brought to the Batcave. Why are we meeting here?" Batgirl stammered, confused.

"Batgirl, I... we..." Robin piped up, but couldn't find the words. He looked at his mentor, and downed his head.

"It's okay Robin, I wouldn't expect you to break this news on your own. If you could kindly press flip the switch that we've used so many times." Batman said, clapping his hand over his junior partner's shoulder.

Batgirl stood, and watched him cross them room, his hand trembled slightly as he reached for the Shakespeare bust, then he tilted the head backward. Batman nodded reassuringly, then spoke. "You see Batgirl, we felt it was time you knew exactly who Batman and Robin are."

Robin flipped the switch, and the bookcase slid away, revealing two golden poles, labeled Bruce and Dick. Batgirl opened her mouth wide and gasped. They took off their masks and stood together in front of their respective Batpoles.

"Oh my... Bruce Wayne... Dick Grayson... are bbbBatman and Robin?!" Batgirl was shocked, she would have never guessed this, if she lived to be a thousand. "I... have to sit down." She sat down on a comfortable antique chair and began to compose herself, as Bruce and Dick replaced their masks.

"We've fought together, saved each other's lived many times, and we want you to know, we don't want any more secrets between partners." Robin said, extending his hand.

"So Alfred... he knew as well?" Batgirl asked.

"He has been a trusted secret member of the team since day one. And has proven to be a valuable ally." Batman said. "We were hoping that you would trust us, as much as we trust you."

Batgirl thought for a moment, then downed her head, shaking it. "I'm sorry, i'm so sorry to both of you." She looked up, visibly scared. "This is just too much for me to process right now. I... I'm not comfortable giving away my secret. I need some time to think." She stood up to leave. Robin moved toward her, but Batman grabbed him by the wrist. He looked back, and Batman shook his head.

"We... understand Batgirl, take what time you need." Batman said, forcing a smile.

Batgirl nodded silently, and left. They couldn't help but notice she seemed to wipe a tear from her eye as she exited the door.

Robin noticed the look on Batman's face, it was the same look he had each time he arrested Catwoman. Hoping for something, but being let down. He pulled off his mask, and spoke to him, not as a fellow crimefighter, but as a son to a father.

"Batma... Bruce, why did you let her go. We trusted her, she knows our secret now, what if she..."

Batman stopped him with a stern but caring look, then removed his cowl. "This is about trust Dick. Remember that time Joker got us with the paralyzing joy buzzers? We nearly died. Batgirl could have unmasked us then, but she chose not to. If we could trust her at our most vulnerable moment, we can trust her now."

"Gosh, you're right Bruce, I guess I was just disappionted and a little mad. She'll be back won't she?"

Before Batman could answer, the Batphone glowed and began to beep. Batman answered, "Yes commishioner? Riddler has escaped? We'll be right there!" He hung up the phone, and put his cowl on yet again, "Duty calls old chum, to the Batpoles!"

Soon our heroes make their way to Gotham City Hall, and race up the steps to Commissioner Gordon’s office.

“Thank you for coming so quickly caped crusaders. I just wish it were under better circumstances.” Gordon said, his voice firm as usual.

“Robin and I live for the day when crime is no longer a problem.” Batman said. “Until then, how may we be of help?”

“That rascally Riddler has gotten his devilish digits on some kind of new bomb. It not only got him out of jail, but it left us two of his patented riddles.” O’Hara handed each of the ace crimefighters a slip of paper.

“It even put one of the guards in the infirmary.” O’Hara spoke again, this time with anger in his voice.

“Holy hand grenade!” Robin exclaimed. “A fiend like Riddler, on the loose with explosives.”

“The very thought chills the blood.” Gordon said, and sank into his chair.

Batman examined his note and began to think quickly. “What is capable of generating hundreds of degrees, but never gets any hotter? A University, they generate hundreds of degrees for some of the brightest young minds in this country.”

“What can a wealthy man give as much as he wants that a genie can only fulfill three times?” Robin pondered aloud, then answered his own query. “Grant! A genie can only grant three wishes, but a rich man can give out as many grants as he wants.”

Gordon slammed his fist on the desk, “The grant money from Gotham’s most generous foundations is set to arrive today at Gotham University.”

“Is there no end to what he'll stoop to? Stealing from needy students.”

“I wouldn't put it past him Chief. We had best hurry if we are to stop him. To the batmobile!” Batman said, seconds before they turned to leave.

*batspin*

Meanwhile at Gotham University, we find The Riddler flanked by two thugs making his way to the financial office of Gotham University.

“Hey boss,” one of the thugs spoke up, “why do you bother leaving those riddles for the cops all the time?”

Riddler stopped in his tracks, and rapped the thug on the head with his cane. “Ow!” He helped.

“Because as much as I enjoy baffling imbeciles like you, matching wits with the caped crusader is a true joy. He is the only person in Gotham whose intellect comes even close to my own. And when he meets his final end, it will solidify me as the greatest criminal mastermind in history!” Riddler's voice went higher and higher until he broke into an unsettling giggle.

The other thug began to speak. “Then what boss? You gonna retire?”

Riddler started to bring his cane up for a strike, but relented. “My latest plan is to start my own crime college. Once I've stolen the grant money from Gotham University, many of its scholars will resort to crime, and when they do, my crime college will welcome them with open arms. No longer will I have to associate myself with incompetents, I'll be molding the most brilliant young minds in Gotham in my image.”

They stopped, and Riddler signaled them to be quiet. He peered around a corner and saw two guards. Readying a riddle bomb, he leapt into view, his thugs following his lead.

“Greeting gentlemen! I'd like to speak to someone about a grant, several actually.”

One guard answered, “The financial officer is at lunch, you'll have to come back later.”

“Wait,” the other one said, “he's not a student, that's The Riddler!”

“Guilty as charged.” Riddler said with a smile. He pressed a button on his bomb and rolled it toward them.

The men didn't have time to react before the bomb went off, or sent them sprawling against the walls, they landed unconscious.

Outside the dynamic duo had just arrived. They leapt out of the Batmobile seconds before the explosion.

“Holy sonic boom Batman! Catwoman’s echo chamber wasn't that loud.”

“Quickly Robin, get the Bat-line while I calculate the trajectory.”

As the boy wonder hurried to the trunk, Batman began working out the figures. He then pointed to a window several yards behind the explosion. “There Robin, right above that window, four hundred pounds of thrust.”

Robin nodded, attached the bat-line to the Batmobile, and fired. A bat shaped hook flew like a bullet, and locked itself in place. They each grabbed a handle and immediately were propelled upward. In seconds, they crashed through the window and were ready to confront Riddler and his men.

“Batman! So you were able to figure out my clever clues.” Riddler said, as he turned to face his enemies.

“They weren't as clever as usual Riddler, you must be slipping.” Batman quipped.

“Put the money back and come quietly!” Robin said, punching his fist for emphasis.

“We'll soon see who outwits who, when my latest plan comes to its apex, there will be more criminals than even you can fight Batman!” Riddler laughed, then called his men. “Puzzle, Query… get them!”

The two burly thugs leapt out from the financial office door, and rushed at Batman and Robin.
Ordinarily, two bigger, stronger men would have an advantage in a somewhat narrow hall. But Batman and Robin are a top notch fighting duo, who excel at defying the odds.

As the men ran forward with their arms out in front of them, Batman and Robin deftly ducked under, rolled backward, and tossed them with a thud. Then they sprang back to their feet and stood ready.

Puzzle and Query got up slowly, shook off the effects of their landing, and charged again, only to be met with simultaneous punches, that staggered them backward. They returned with punches of their own, sending the dynamic duo back a few steps.

Thinking quickly, Batman grabbed Robin by the arm, talking the cue the boy wonder leapt as the caped crusader swung him, and landed a flying kick on Query.

Then just as quickly, Batman hit Puzzle with a double fisted punch, as Robin dropped to the floor and swept his leg, sending him tripping into Query.

Riddler emerged from the office, with a bag in one hand and a curious green box in the other. “It's so hard to find good help these days, but that will change soon enough.”

“Drop it Riddler, or we’ll hurl our Batarangs!” Batman shouted, as the heroes reached for their utility belts.

“If you say so Batman.” Riddler grinned, then tossed his riddle bomb. Luckily, they shielded their faces before the explosion knocked them off their feet.

Riddler ran past the dazed duo, mocking them with his trademark giggle. He stopped to rouse his men who staggered after him.

After a moment or two, Batman & Robin shook off the effects of the blast and stood up.

“Are you okay Robin?” Batman asked, shaking his head a little.

“Yeah,” he replied, “gosh Batman, it sure was a good thing we had those protective Bat-ear plugs.”

“Like those fine lads in the boy scouts say, always be prepared. I'm afraid Riddler has eluded us for the time being. But it looks like we have another clue.” Batman removed his earplugs then knelt down to pick up a piece of green paper, when he heard a groan from the financial office.

“That must be the guards for the financial office.” Robin said as he ran toward the door which was blown off its hinges.

“We’ll catch up with the Riddler later, but right now those men may need medical attention.”

*batspin*

Later, at Stately Wayne Manor, in the depths of the Batcave, Batman and Robin are hard at work deciphering the Riddler’s latest clue.

“Why would the Riddler leave us sheet music as a clue? Music has never been his style.” Robin pondered aloud, pacing back and forth.

“I wondered that myself so I fed it into the Bat-computer to confirm my suspicion.” A moment later, and the tune of “hickory, dickory, dock” was being played from the computer.

“As I thought,” Batman said, “but why? Robin, are there any docks in Gotham harbor that share those names?”

He consulted the map behind him, but came up empty. “Holy atlas Batman. I can't find those names anywhere.”

“My apologies for interrupting Sirs, but there is a phone call for Bruce Wayne, should I tell them you’re occupied?” Batman and Robin turned and acknowledged Alfred, who was exiting his private elevator.

“Not at all Alfred, I'll retrieve it on the extension right here.” Batman felt that something was troubling Alfred, but thought it best not to pry at the moment.

“Very good sir. Might I inquire as to why you're listening to Hickety Dickety Dock?”

Batman and Robin stared at each other, then Batman switched off the computer. “Alfred you've just solved the riddle!”

“Happy to be of help sirs, will there be anything else?” Alfred smiled, his countenance lightened.

“No Alfred, thank you.”

The butler nodded, and went back to his duties.

*batspin*

Meanwhile in his criminal lair across town, the Riddler was watching the news. The reporter has just grimly stated that all of the grant money in Gotham University had been stolen. Every student relying on it would be unfortunately turned away for the year.

“And once I have Batman and Robin out of the way, The Riddler College of Crime will welcome them with open arms!” Riddler threw himself on his back in a giggling fit.

“Gee boss, how are you gonna do that?” Query asked, living up to his name.

“Just keep making those bombs like I showed you.” Riddler leapt back to his feet, and pointed his cane at him. “Once the dynamic dolts fall into my trap, they'll be blown to bat bits!”

“This just in! Gotham University has just announced that a generous donation from its most famous graduate, Bruce Wayne, has saved the dreams of college students for the coming year.” The reporter smiled warmly, and set his notes aside.

“WHAT!?” Riddler shouted, and grabbed a bomb from the pile. Puzzle and Query ducked under the table.

The reporter continued… “From all of us at this station, and from all of those scholars who may have turned to crime in despair, thank you Bruce Wayne.”

Riddler hurled the bomb at the television and it exploded into a thousand pieces.

“That confounded do gooder! He'll pay all right, to me!” Riddler snarled, he had never looked or sounded so menacing.

“What are you gonna do boss? Kidnap him?” Query asked, shaking under the table.

“Do you take me for a common felon?” Riddler snapped, “Besides, the second anyone would lay a hand on someone so important to Gotham, Batman and Robin would race to his rescue. They must be eliminated! Load those bombs into the van while I lay a trap for our foes.”

*batspin*

“Atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed.”

“Roger, ready to go.”

No sooner were those famous words uttered, and the Batmobile roared to life again.

“It sure was great timing on Alfred’s part, we may have still been working this one out.” Robin said, with a grateful tone.

“Yes, I had forgotten that old nursery rhyme had an English origin. Alfred has again proven himself part of the team.” Batman smiled, as soon as this caper was over, Alfred would get a raise.

Soon they arrived at the Gotham docks, and in no time, located the intersection of Hickety street and Dickety avenue. Where inside the now-defunct Maus-Rannupp clock store, the Riddler was lying in wait.

“How should we approach Batman? Through the front, the back, the window, or the roof?” Robin asked.

“The Riddler obviously has his lair booby trapped, he may not expect us to walk through the front door.” Batman answered.

They strode up to the main entrance, Batman silently counted off 1...2...3, before they kicked the door in. Once inside, the door closed behind them, and a disembodied giggle was heard all around.

“Congratulations for solving my musical Riddle dynamic duo. It's a pity I can't be here to witness your demise. I have bigger matters to attend to, so I'll leave you this last riddle.”

“We can be shot, fired or tossed, but if you can't solve this one fast enough, you'll be riddled permanently!”

Batman's mind worked faster than ever before, and a slight click confirmed his guess a second before he could react.

“Bullets! Robin, get down!” He shoved Robin out of harm’s way, and to the floor, before dropping himself as quickly as possible. What he didn't notice was a misplaced Riddler bomb, inches from his face.

Riddler’s ghoulish giggle nearly drowned out the sound of the bullet burst, but not the blast. Which luckily for Batman, was inferior to the others, and wasn't violent enough to be deadly, the flash of light however…

Once the bullet storm subsided, Robin looked over to see his mentor, a man who was like a father to him, clutching his face.

“Batman!” he shouted, and rushed to his side. “Batman are you okay?”

He pulled his hands away from his face and whispered, “Robin… I… I'm blind.”

Could it be... the caped crusader blinded by a Riddle bomb?

Will he be able to carry on his crimefighting career?

Will Robin have to fly solo?

Don't miss the next thrilling episode!

My apologies for keeping you waiting, the rest of part 1 will come soon.

If any bat-fan can solve both of these riddles before Batman & Robin do, they can choose the villain in my next story.

Riddle me this...
Q: What is capable of generating hundreds of degrees, but never gets any hotter :?:

Q: What can a wealthy man give as much as he wants that a genie can only fulfill three times :?:

My apologies for double posting, I'm not trying to bump. But I'm running a contest of sorts, while I'm working on the rest of part 1.

If anyone can solve the riddles I posted above, they can pick the villain in my next story. Good luck Bat-fans!
